Calling in the Experts to Battle Roaches

So maybe there is a reason that roaches have been around for 280 million years. They are hardy little souls. Who was I to think that I could fight these little beasts on my own?

My nightly ritual of meticulously cleaning the kitchen and putting away all the dishes and cat food wasn't really doing the job. Those little creepy crawlies were still in my house. It was time to call in the experts.

The Grass Can Be Greener

Americans take great pride in perfectly manicured green lawns. Billions of dollars are spent every year caring for them. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water are used for irrigation. A surprising and chilling fact is that more pesticides are applied to lawns per acre than farmers put on their fields! According to the EPA, surveys show higher concentrations of some pesticides, particularly insecticides, in urban streams than agricultural streams. It turns out that lawns aren't so green after all.

Don't despair. You can still have an attractive lawn without using harsh chemicals.

BPA in the Can

After consumers started avoiding polycarbonate plastic bottles because the plastic leaches a hormone-disrupting chemical, Bisphenol A (BPA), manufacturers started switching to other types of plastic. BPA is also used in the epoxy resin that lines the inside of metal food and soda cans -- even infant formula.

Stay Safe at the Beach This Summer

Avoiding rip tides and slathering on the sunscreen aren’t the only things you need to do to be healthy and safe at the beach this summer. There may not be trash and medical waste on the beach, but the pollution you don't see could be hazardous to your health. Swimming in contaminated beach water can make you sick. And even clean-looking beaches are at risk.

When it rains, untreated sewage and contaminated stormwater flow into beachwaters, carrying human and animal waste, trash, and other bacteria-laden nastiness.

Is Your Plastic Safe?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a hormone-disrupting chemical that in animal studies has been associated with reproductive abnormalities such as lower sperm counts, hormonal changes, enlarged prostate glands, abnormalities in the number of chromosomes in eggs, and pre-cancerous changes in the breast and prostate. So why is it in a lot of everyday products like baby bottles, reusable water bottles and canned soda?
