Hi,
I live in brooklyn, ny very close to where there was an enormous oil spill (they say larger than the exxon valdez spill) that has never been fully cleaned. the spill is getting more attention these days due to gentrification and an increased interest in real estate, but the area continues to see more and more construction.
i have a four month old baby and live in a loft (was a zipper factory) that my husband and some friends built about 10 years ago. we live on the ground floor, and i am concerned about the oil spill (they continue to find "oily substances" in the soil on our street. although they tested some of the soil the results do not seem to be known (or are not published). we tested the walls of our apt for lead (negative) but i am very concerned about what an "oily soil" under our building or simply all around us in the neighborhood means for our child. in addition, is there anything else we should look for due to the fact that this was an old factory?
do we need to move? any and all info would be great.
thank you,
karly
