Send this post to a friendHi- read an article in ONEARTH and I happen to have a problem in my Acupuncture office that I am concerned about. There has been a leak for many years and lately I have arisen from denial and have alerted mangement and the owner to the high possiblity that there is Black Mold. Can you recommend a professional in Oregon that we can contact that will do an independent investigation? I have already asked for an independent party. And is there a particular method to look for in detection? Thanks for your help.

You are right to be concerned, mold growing on damp surfaces releases spores that can be inhaled which may cause congestion and throat irritation. People with asthma should avoid any contact with mold. Some molds, so-called "black mold," also produce chemicals known at mycotoxins that may be dangerous to humans. You should find a certified professional to take an air sample and test it for mold spores.
Recent scientific studies consider houses with indoor mold spore counts higher than 1,300 spores per cubic meter (spores/m3) to be "moldy homes" that can cause health problems.
Decreasing indoor moisture is the most critical factor for controlling mold growth, so get that leak fixed. Any absorbent materials, like ceiling tiles or carpeting, should be removed.
