I heard that, because of the batteries in them, Prius' are just as bad for the environment from a pollution standpoint as HUMMERs. Is that true?

It's not true -- an internal combustion car's lifetime emissions are nearly twice those of a hybrid. Just see what NRDC's Vehicles Campaign Director, Deron Lovaas, has to say about this in his blog post.

As I understand it the problem with Prius is that Canada mines the nickle in a devastating strip mining that has polluted terribly. Then the nickle is shipped way over to China where they make the batteries which are shipped back. By the time they create the actual car, they have really out-carboned and out-polluted many other cars. Leave it to big global corporatists to find a way to harm our earth!!!
