Did You Know?
Pears are part of the rose family.
Different varieties of pears make them available year round.
Nutrition Facts
Pears are a good source of fiber, vitamins C and K, and copper. Pears have also been known to help lower high cholesterol.
Shopping and Storage
Pears are extremely fragile and perishable once ripe, so usually grocery stores carry unripe pears that require a few days to fully ripen. Try to find pears that are a little firm, without punctures, soft spots, or bruising.
If you won't be using your pears when they become ripe, they will remain fresh a few days longer in the refrigerator.
Preparation
Pears are a great snack eaten whole or sliced, but can also be added to salads, yogurt, and can be poached as well.
