What suprised me about the results of my home energy audit was that one of the biggest issues was also cheap to fix: my forced air heating ducts needed to be sealed. A 30% loss of heating and cooling energy is typical for ducts that haven't been sealed (and tested to verify the fix!). A do-it-yourselfer can seal up ducts with a rubbery coating material called mastic. Another cheap thing was caulking and sealing cracks and places where pipes and wires penetrated walls. And for $1 per six-foot section, you can put foam sleeves on your hot water pipes. Foam weather strips for doors and windows is also another cheap and easy fix. Not everything has to be hard or expensive to do.
